Italy is close to home and yet a true honeymoon: sea, hills, art and food you'll still be talking about years later. The art is in the choices: which region, which moment and how to build the trip.
Three routes that work beautifully
- Rome and the Amalfi Coast: two or three nights in Rome, then a week on the coast. A classic, and rightly so.
- Tuscany and the coast: calm among the vineyards first, then the sea. Lovely with a hire car in Tuscany, without one on the coast.
- Lake Como: elegant and peaceful, easy to combine with a few days in Milan.
What I look out for
- The season. July and August are hot and busy; May, June and September are often more beautiful.
- The location. On the Amalfi Coast, location decides how many steps and how much traffic you'll face. A room with a sea view and a terrace makes all the difference.
- The transfers. A logical order, so you don't spend half your days on the road.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time for a honeymoon in Italy?
May, June and September are usually ideal: warm, but less crowded and less hot than July and August. Many hotels on the Amalfi Coast close in winter and reopen around April.
Amalfi Coast or Tuscany?
The Amalfi Coast is sea, cliffs and villages clinging to the rocks. Tuscany is hills, wine, art and calm. Many couples combine them: a few nights in Tuscany or Rome first, then the coast.
How many nights do you need?
Ten to fourteen nights for a combination of two places. For the Amalfi Coast alone, five to seven nights is a lovely length.
