Japan is for couples who want something completely different: the energy of Tokyo, the stillness of a ryokan and the temples of Kyoto. It's a trip worth preparing well, and that's exactly where I help.
A two-week route
- Tokyo, 4–5 nights. Neighbourhoods, food, design, and a hotel high above the city.
- Hakone or another onsen area, 1–2 nights. A ryokan with hot-spring baths and, with a little luck, a view of Mount Fuji.
- Kyoto, 4–5 nights. Temples, gardens and old streets. Head out early, before the crowds.
- Optional Osaka or Naoshima, 2 nights. Food, or art on an island.
What I look out for
- The season. Cherry blossom and autumn colours are stunning, but hotels fill up early.
- The ryokan. Rooms with a private bath, and a dinner that suits you.
- Luggage. In Japan you travel by train. I arrange for your suitcases to be sent ahead, so you travel light.
Tell me your dates and what appeals to you, and I'll suggest a route. See other honeymoon destinations.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time for a honeymoon in Japan?
Spring (late March and early April, the cherry blossom) and autumn (October and November) are the most beautiful, but also the busiest. June is the rainy season, and July and August are hot and humid.
How long do you need for Japan?
Twelve to sixteen days for Tokyo, Hakone or another hot-spring area, and Kyoto. With more time, add Kanazawa, Naoshima or Osaka, for example.
What is a ryokan?
A traditional Japanese inn, often with hot-spring baths (onsen) and an elaborate dinner of many small dishes. One or two nights in a good ryokan is, for many couples, the highlight of the trip.
