Travel guides › Guide · The Maldives
The Maldives are the classic dream honeymoon: one island, one resort, and nothing but sea. Precisely because you spend your whole stay in one place, choosing the resort is everything.
What I look for in a resort
- The atmosphere. Adult and quiet, or lively with lots of restaurants? Some resorts are also popular with families.
- The reef. Want to snorkel straight from the beach? Then a good house reef matters.
- The transfer. Speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight: it decides your travel time after a long flight.
- Food and drink. On an island you eat at the resort every day. I look at the restaurants and whether a meal plan is the smarter choice.
Smart combinations
You usually fly via the Middle East. A few nights in Dubai or Doha on the way breaks up the journey and adds a city. Sri Lanka and the Maldives also combine beautifully: culture and nature first, then rest.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time for the Maldives?
The dry season runs roughly from December to April. From May to November there's more rain, but it stays warm, and it's often quieter.
Overwater villa or beach villa?
An overwater villa puts the lagoon right at your door. A beach villa offers more privacy and shade, and sand underfoot. Many couples split their stay: a few nights in each.
How do you get to your resort?
By speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight plus boat, depending on the resort. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so your arrival time sometimes decides whether you need a night in Malé.
